About Cross Stitching

The earliest known cross-stitch sampler in the United States was created by Loara Standish, the daughter of Captain Myles Standish. This sample is currently preserved in the Pilgrim Hall in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Today, whether a hobby or a leisure activity, cross-stitching is one of the most popular forms of embroidery in the western world. Easy to learn and very adaptable, all it takes is a little patience for even beginners to craft beautiful stitchery. Beginners usually start with a cross-stitch kit that includes a pattern for a single design, floss, fabric, and needles. In addition, a hoop and Aida fabric are also useful. Aida fabric is 100% cotton with woven thread groupings that form tiny squares which are designed specifically for cross-stitching. For advanced stitchers, different techniques to create new visual effects are also possible; the two most common are Blackwork and Assisi embroidery. Blackwork embroidery is used to fill in the design area with repetitive patterns. This technique had been labeled Blackwork because it is usually done using black silk thread on white linen fabric. Assisi embroidery is the opposite of Blackwork; here areas of the design are left open. There is no limit to how much can be added to enhance design. Beadwork, paillettes, and special threads are just a few visual effects that will add to your design. Often used in garments and framed art, cross-stitching is a great activity to relax and let the creative juices flow.
