Fiskars Corporation, famous as a manufacturer of scissors, axes, and knives, was created in 1649, by a Dutch entrepreneur, Peter Thorwoste, in the village of Fiskari, near Helsinki. Initially, the company had a blast furnace and manufactured wire, hoes, nails, and metal reinforced wheels. During the industrial revolution in Europe, Fiskars ventured into full-fledged steel and ironworks, producing steam engines, agricultural machines, and household equipment, such as forks and candlesticks in addition to scissors. The first Fiskars scissors, made of heavy forged steel, was launched almost a century and a half ago. In 1915, Fiskars was listed on the Helsinki Stock Exchange. Fiskars was also a pioneer in the manufacture of microwave ovens in Europe. The characteristic orange colored scissors was launched in 1967. Today, Fiskar's biggest holding, Fiskar Brands, has its headquarters in the US state of Wisconsin. The distinct business divisions include Fiskars Corporation and Fiskars Housewares in Helsinki, Fiskars Europe in Belgium, Fiskars Garden and Outdoor Living as well as Fiskar School, Office, and Craft, in Wisconsin, USA, Consumer Electronics in Minnesota, USA, and Outdoor Recreation in Oregon, USA. For gardening aficionados, Fiskars offers cutting tools, such as axes, floral snips, grass shears, hand pruners, and loppers, as well as digging tools including shovels and spades. In addition to brooms and rakes, the company also produces watering implements such as drips, soakers, and sprinkler hoses. For school children, Fiskars offers scissors, compasses, protractors, rulers, pencils, and erasers among other craft related items. For office use, the company manufactures versatile paper trimmers.
