About Mohair

The use of mohair in doll making began in France and Germany. The softness of the material made it ideal for simulating hair. German manufacturers were importing their supply from Bradford, located in Yorkshire, England. According to a publication on doll studies, Bradford was producing an average of more than 50,000 pounds of doll hair per week.At the time (the 1880s), women were being employed by the doll manufacturers to act as hairstylists for dolls' wigs. Some women would work in the factory, though many of them worked out of their home. Their wages were so low that they would have to work an entire day to be able to buy a pound of butter. The style of the wigs changed over time to reflect the popular hairstyles of children. For example, in the late 1880s, the Rembrandt style was popular (the center part), while in the 1900s, side parts were more fashionable. These styles were reflected in the mohair doll wigs that were produced. Hair color was another hot topic--light blonde, brown, auburn, and strawberry blonde hair colors were common. Whenever a little girl of means felt as though it was time for her doll to have a makeover, she could take it to the local doll hospital and swap one wig out for another. Some dolls even had multiple wigs. This made it possible for little girls to change their minds on a whim--and what girl wouldn't want to be able to do that?
