One of the newest Barbie lines, the Fashion Model Collection (also known as Silkstone), was unveiled in 1999 to great acclaim. The dolls had two strengths going for them right out of the gate (or box): high couture designers would be in charge of the fashions, and the body was called Silkstone, which created a buzz among collectors. The word was out and everyone was eagerly anticipating their release. The first two dolls were available as a blonde or a brunette and they were clad in lingerie. This spurned the nickname Lingerie Barbies. The dolls are produced in limited editions, and the Silkstone collection in particular was limited to 45,000 dolls. While it may seem as though this is a high number, production numbers for other limited edition Barbies were greater and this was a true reduction. The body of the dolls is what separates them from the rest of the Barbie lines. It has the touch of porcelain but looks more like the vinyl collectors have come to love over the years. Their faces and make-up is also reminiscent of the original Barbie from 1959. While some collectors would prefer that the dolls were dressed in higher-quality fabrics, their popularity still remains. With names like Trench Setter, Trace of Lace, Suite Retreat, and Stolen Magic, these special Barbies are obviously not meant for children. They are recommended for those aged 14 and up. Each Silkstone Barbie comes complete with detailed accessories, and there are separate 'fashion collections' available as well. |
