About Dawn Of The Dead

Dawn of the Dead is an archetypal zombie film. Written and directed by George Romero, who created the original Night of Living Dead in 1968, the film imagines a world in which zombies have risen to attack metropolitan centers. A group of frightened human beings at a television studio seek refuge in a shopping mall, but their internal fighting undermines their efforts to stave off the zombies. The film was released in the late 1970s to great box office success, considering that it was made for only $1.5 million. Dawn of the Dead starred David Emge, Ken Foree, and Gaylen Ross, and it was produced by Dario Argento. The film shot on location in Monroeville, Pennsylvania at a real shopping mall. Technical and logistical confusions delayed the production, but Romero and his crew managed to pull off a remarkable technical tour de force given the state of special effects at that time. The movie was distributed by United Film Distribution Company and ran just a little over two hours.Unlike typical Zombie/Slasher films that have long been a staple of the American movie-going experience, Dawn of the Dead aimed for a higher social commentary, ridiculing the American consumerist impulse and suggesting a perspective on humanity's inability to cooperate even under duress.Dawn of the Dead is also known for its moves towards feminism. The female lead, Francine, acts as an assertive if aggressive member of the Zombie Fighting Force. The surprisingly realistic special effects were developed by master artist Tom Savini.
