About Gone With The Wind

Gone With The Wind is an epic tale of love, loss, and redemption in the antebellum South. The story follows Scarlett O'Hara, the daughter of a plantation owner, as she witnesses the Civil War and Reconstruction. The tale in many ways romanticizes the events of the Civil War and its aftermath, and its political sensibilities show sympathy for the Confederate position.Gone With The Wind was originally a novel written by a woman named Margaret Mitchell in 1936. The epic book was her first work, and it won the Pulitzer Prize a year later. In 1939, producers adapted the book for Hollywood, and the movie version garnered a record number of Oscars (including a Best Actress statuette for Vivien Leigh) and grossed more money than any prior film in the history of cinema. One of the most heart-rending scenes in the movie is the destruction of Atlanta by Union forces, which took place in 1864. Mitchell pays homage to the bravery of soldiers on both sides of the Civil War divide. In 1991, author Alexandra Ripley published a sequel to the novel entitled Scarlett. Ten years later, an attempt to parody the story by re-telling it from an African-American point of view was met by a lawsuit, which was eventually dropped.Gone With The Wind is an incredibly important historical work. Its tremendous success says as much about American culture and values in the 1930s as it does about the compelling nature of the story itself. The movie's vivid, gorgeous depiction of Scarlett O'Hara's family plantation, Tara, reflects a deep artistic sensibility. Many believe this film set the bar for historical fiction. Memorabilia and other GWTW-related items are collected by movie lovers and book lovers everywhere.
