About Iron Man
Experiencing renewed popularity since the release of the Jon Favreau-directed feature films, comic book character Iron Man is once again one of the most well-known action heroes from the world of comics. Originally created by Marvel's famous Stan Lee, Iron Man starred in multiple Marvel publications and was an original character in "The Avengers" series of comics. Iron Man and his alter ego Tony Stark were created by Lee as an antidote to the counterculture of the 1960s. Lee thought it might be interesting to create a hero that was an inveterate capitalist, contrasting with much of the pop culture of the time. He was also interested in riffing off of Howard Hughes' persona, a brilliant, wealthy, and eccentric man who had a way with the ladies. Hughes and Iron Man also epitomized the creativity and intrepid attitude of the archetypal American inventor, another facet of his personality that Lee wanted to explore. After dabbling in Cold War themes, the comic series took a more personal turn, exploring Stark's struggle with alcoholism among other issues. Since the release of the films and the standout characterization of Iron Man by actor Robert Downey Jr., more Iron Man collectibles and memorabilia have appeared on the marketplace. An Iron Man figure, for example, can be found in many iterations, including stealth Iron Man, patriot Iron Man, and a version of the character created for younger children. Copies of the feature films on DVD and Blu-ray are also popular choices so that fans can re-experience the excitement of these adventure films over and over again.
