About Loch Ness Monster

After Big Foot and the Abominable Snowman (Yeti), the next in line of controversial creatures is Nessie, or Ness, an inhabitant of Loch Ness, a deep lake near Inverness in northern Scotland. The Loch Ness Monster also has the dubious 'scientific' name of Nessiteras rhombopteryx. Supposedly a plesiosaur-like creature with a long neck and four limbs, the animal's description is distorted due to lack of sufficient images. The stories and rumors concerning the Loch Ness Monster have been told for centuries. Carvings of the unidentified animal made some 1,500 years ago have even been found in the Scottish Highlands. The modern wave of reports of sightings started in 1933, with the Inverness Courier newspaper publishing a story about Mr. and Mrs. John Mackay claiming to have seen an enormous animal rolling and plunging on the surface of the lake. The title 'monster' was chosen by the editor of the newspaper, and there have been many sightings of the creature since. On April 19, 1934, R.K. Wilson, a surgeon, allegedly took a photograph of the Loch Ness Monster in which the long neck of the creature is evidently seen gliding through the water. Years later, after the photo was credited as hard core evidence of the existence of the creature, Marmaduke Wetherell confessed to have faked the photo after being hired by the Daily Mail. He also stated that Wilson's name was used to add credibility to the photo. Underwater photography is difficult due to the murky waters and low sunlight penetration of Loch Ness. In the 1970s, a group led by Dr. Robert Rines took some underwater photographs, one of which depicted a rhomboid flipper claimed to be one of the monster's fins. In July 2003, the BBC undertook an investigation using 600 separate sonar beams but found no trace of any monster in the lake. They concluded that it does not exist. Nonetheless, the Loch Ness area has now become a full-blown tourist spot complete with submarines rides and hotels.
