Marvin the Martian has been a classic Warner Brothers cartoon character for more than fifty years. First introduced in the 1948 cartoon 'Haredevil Hare,' Marvin was a nameless Martian who tormented Bugs Bunny during his trip to the moon. Marvin's original costume featured a brush-top helmet, a kilt, and giant oversized tennis shoes. His costume was inspired by classic images of Mars, the Roman god of war, for whom the planet Mars was named. Marvin's mission in life was simple. He wanted to blow up the planet Earth because it obstructed his view of Venus. Commander K-9, a dog from outer space, often accompanied Marvin on his missions. He traveled aboard a vessel called the Mars Maggot. His weapon of choice was the ACME Disintegration Pistol. It wasn't until 1979 that fans of the cute alien creature learned his name. In The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Movie, the name 'Marvin Martian' appeared under a portrait. Marvin's career was on fire during the 1980's with appearances in Bugs Bunny's Bustin' Out All Over, and in the movie that made him a star, Duck Dodgers and the Return of the 24-1/2th Century. Today, Marvin continues to adorn everything from lunch boxes and Pez dispensers to pajamas for kids and bathroom accessories. Marvin has made special guest appearances in movies like Space Jam and Toy Story, and on TV shows like 'Powerpuff Girls' and 'The Simpsons.' |
