The Wonder Years follows Kevin Arnold, his friends, and his family as he comes of age during the 1960s and 70s. The show is narrated by the adult Kevin (Daniel Stern) as he looks back over the events that helped shape his life. The series premiered in 1988 and ran for six seasons before coming to an end in 1993 after 115 episodes. A major storyline of the series was the relationship between Kevin and his friend Winnie as they grew from young friends of the opposite sex into much more than that. When the actors hit puberty in real life, this posed a bit of a problem for producers. Dancia McKellar (Winnie) grew much faster than Fred Savage (Kevin), which forced them to put their relationship on hold until Fred caught up. Nevertheless, this issue didn't seem to have much of a detrimental effect on the series. After all, teenagers meet new people in high school and oftentimes grow apart as they grow up. It also allowed producers to heighten the drama and anticipation of their potential reconciliation. Ultimately, things didn't end happily ever after as they would have on other shows. This realism and humanity is one reason why so many people love The Wonder Years. For fans who want to relive the series in its entirety, The Wonder Years season box sets hit store shelves in 2006. Eight years prior, two The Wonder Years DVD collections were released, one featuring three of the series' best episodes, and another featuring two Christmas episodes. Although these two DVDs are now out-of-print, it's not difficult to find pre-owned versions. |
