Be Good Tanyas
The Be Good Tanyas are a rock folk trio out of British Columbia, Canada. The three women who started the Be Good Tanyas--Trish Klein, Samantha Parton, and Frazey Ford--first bonded over their love of Chinese tea and vintage clothing. Their funky style and good humor have tamed music critics and cultivated a loyal fan base. Their songs are full of fiddling, storytelling, rustic rhythms, ambient melodies, and quirky counterpoints.During 2000, the Be Good Tanyas set off to take a tour of America's heartland. Traveling in a beat-up Dodge van, they persevered through obstacle after obstacle--including fire and ice--to make it to the heart of America's folk scene, New Orleans. Inspired by the sinking city, singer Jolie Holland went on to pen a duet with Samantha Parton entitled, ''Lakes of Pontchartrain.''Upon return from their American tour, the band recorded an album called Blue Horse. After this, they went on a series of tours to the UK, North America, and even Australia. Although they played in more than a few dives, they were universally well received. Part of the charm of the Be Good Tanyas is the group's passion for improvisation, storytelling, and musical experimentation.Brewed in the tradition of Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan, inspired by modern folk artists like Ani DiFranco, and distilled with unusual Canadian sensibilities, the Be Good Tanyas are destined to emerge as an ever more powerful force on the folk scene. Recently, they recorded a follow-up to Blue Horse, entitled Chinatown. This is a reference to the location of Trish Klein's house, the place where the trio first forged their connection.
