Popeye was conceived and created by Elzie Crisler Segar in 1929. He was a part of the Thimble Theatre comic strip series. However, Popeye was not the main character in the comic strip. But as he gained in popularity, he slowly became the lead character in Thimble Theatre series. Thimble Theatre was renamed to Popeye in the 1970s. Popeye is always seen in his sailor's uniform. He has his signature corncob pipe in his mouth. His out-of-proportion muscular forearms each bear an anchor tattoo. Spinach gives Popeye instant, superhuman energy. He uses the spinach as a secret weapon whenever he is outnumbered or overpowered by his enemies. Popeye's sweetheart is Olive Oyl. Olive is an anorexically petit looking lanky dame. Popeye is often found competing with his arch rival, Bluto in order to win Olive's affection. Once, Popeye received a mail, only to find a stray tot. He adopted it and named it Swee'Pea. One of Popeye's famous catch-lines is 'I yam what I yam, and that's all I yam.' With time, Popeye look has changed as the artists did. Segar passed away in 1938. After his death, Popeye was sketched by Bug Sagendorf. Today, Popeye is sketched by Hy Eisman. Starting off as a comic strip, Popeye has been adapted into theatrical cartoons, home video releases, and television cartoons. There have also been musical films and video games based on Popeye. Popeye also to a great extent influences children to eat spinach for health reasons.
