About Insulation

Insulation is a method used to prevent any loss of energy occurring in a given area. The loss of energy can be achieved by a 'slow down' or 'resistance' to the direction in which the energy is flowing. Primarily, there are three different types of insulations; Thermal insulation, Electrical insulation and Acoustic insulation. The flow of heat energy is reduced under thermal insulation; electrical insulation restricts the flow of electricity, while acoustical insulators obstruct the flow of sound vibrations. An electrical insulator prevents the flow of electrical charges across a circuit, thereby reducing the flow of electric current. In other words, absence of electric current or flow of electrons is called as electric insulation. Rubber and plastic are major materials used for insulating electrical cables and wiring. They can insulate voltages ranging from a few hundreds to even thousands. Certain materials may insulate against a given form of energy better than another. A diamond is an excellent form of insulator against electricity but an extremely poor thermal insulator. Heat energy flows across a region at a temperature higher than another region. It takes the path of least resistance. This is called as a temperature gradient. A thermal insulator regulates the thermal gradient by reducing the flow of heat energy across regions. Commonly found in large appliances such as ovens, refrigerators, freezers and water heaters, thermal insulation prevents loss of heat energy into the environment or gain heat energy from the environment. An acoustic insulation or soundproofing requires a reduction in sound wave energy between the specified source and receiver. It is the simplest form of insulation of all. Simply increasing the distance between the source and receiver by the use of barriers blocking or absorbing sound energy can reduce the absorption of sound energy by the receiver. Damping structures, active anti-noise generators are advanced techniques used to sound proof a certain area. These techniques rely on noise reduction and absorption of sound energy.
