Garden ponds can add a unique point of interest to any backyard. The materials needed to construct a pond, such as the liner and pump, are so readily available that constructing a pond in your backyard can easily be completed in a weekend.Once you have decided where you want to build your pond, start digging. If digging by hand isn't your cup of tea or you want to finish quickly, you can rent a small backhoe to do the job for you. Once you have the hole for the pond, you are ready to put the liner in place. The liner can be either a flexible sheeting material or a molded plastic liner. Once you have the liner in, fill your pond and attach the pump according to the manufacturer's instructions. Then, step back and take a look. What else do you need? There are a number of water features available to accentuate your pond. Underwater lighting, fountains, and sprayers all add to the look and feel of a garden pond.Once you have your basic garden pond constructed, it is time to add the final touches. Fish, such as koi, make an excellent addition to backyard ponds, as do the great variety of plants that can be submerged in your pond. Most of these plants can easily be placed in your pond, in the pot, with some rocks over the soil to keep it from floating away. If you live in an area with cold winters, you can still keep your koi in the pond as long as the pump keeps the water from freezing. You will want to move your plants inside, unless you plan on replacing them next season.
