When shopping for bed sheets, a lot of people rely on threadcount as the criteria for selecting a good set. The general rule of thumb is that better-quality bed sheets have the highest threadcount. But what is threadcount and how can it be used to determine the value of a set of sheets? Threadcount is defined as the number of threads contained in a square inch of fabric. More threads constitute a tighter weave, which makes for a softer and smoother product. Threadcount measures (TC) start as low as 80 and can go as high as 1,000. For instance, a set of bed sheets with a TC of 100, generally referred to as percale, is perceived as a good product. Sheets made out of sateen, a fabric whose TC starts around 400, are considered better. Of course, the ultimate luxury item are sheets fashioned out of Egyptian cotton, a fabric with a TC ranging from 550 to 800. If you're really serious about finding some high-quality sheets, take a look at the lines produced by well-known names like Ralph Lauren, Laura Ashley, Tommy Hilfiger, or Nautica. These lines will include bed sheets in sizes twin through king, in designs from traditional to contemporary. Most name brand sheet sets typically start at a TC of 200 and then range upwards. Designer lines usually also include plenty of accessories and other bedding products including comforters, duvet covers, blankets, pillow cases and shams. |
