About Christmas Cards

People have been sending Christmas cards since the first half of the 19th century as a means to wish their friends and relatives health and happiness for the Christmas season and the approaching new year. Christmas cards can run from the very religious, featuring images of nativity scenes accompanied by Biblical verse, to the more seasonal, featuring wintry scenes or images of snowmen, sleighs, and the like.In recent years, many people have begun designing their own Christmas cards and letters on their home computers. These letters frequently feature holiday-themed borders or photographs of the family printed with a cheerful message. In 2005, 1.9 billion Christmas cards were sent in the United States alone. This is a huge amount, but in a trend that can probably be attributed to the use of email and cellular phones, the number of Christmas cards received by American households went down from 29 in 1987 to 20 in 2004.Because of their often beautiful imagery, Christmas cards are a popular collectors' item. Some collectors choose to bring their collections out only over the holidays, while others prefer to showcase them year round. The most valuable Christmas cards tend to date from the 1800s, depending on their condition. Collectors may choose to focus on a particular era of Christmas cards, a particular motif, or simply purchase the Christmas cards that they find most interesting or unique. One of the most famous collections of Christmas cards was kept by Queen Mary of Great Britain (1867-1953), and is now kept at the British Museum in London.
