About Cookies

Like most new food creations, cookies were created by accident. To check if their ovens were warm enough to cook their cakes, bakers use to drop a little batter onto a bake sheet. These little test cakes are what eventually evolved into cookies. In fact, the word cookie is derived from the Dutch word 'keokje,' which means little cake. The Dutch were responsible for introducing cookies to the rest of Europe and eventually to the United States. However, each country has since put its own spin on the treat. The British started calling their version of cookies 'biscuits.'The Italians' special twist on cookies are biscotti. In Italian, the word biscotti means twice-baked. Biscotti have very low water content and thus they also have a very long shelf life. This made them the perfect food for 15th century sailors like Christopher Columbus to take on long ocean voyages. An American is accredited with creating chocolate chip cookies. In 1937, the cooks at the Toll House Inn ran out of nuts while making cookies. Therefore, a worker named Ruth Wakefield substituted baking chocolates which she broke into chunks into the cookie recipe. The cookies were a hit with the guests. Ruth Wakefield's newfound cookie recipe was published in several newspapers and history was made. Incidentally, chocolate chip cookies were originally called Toll House Crunch Cookies in honor of their birthplace. Girl Scout Cookies have an even longer history. The troops have been raising money through cookie sales since 1917. They started out with one very simple sugar cookie but have since expanded to eight different varieties, including the popular Thin Mints, Peanut Butter Sandwich, Shortbread, and Samoas.
