Dog houses should be purchased with your pet's welfare in mind. Man's (and woman's) best friend deserves a clean, comfortable, and safe environment in which to relax. After all, your dog will be spending a good deal of time in his or her own space, so it should be as pleasant and inviting as possible. Even dog carriers and crates, when adorned with the right combination of bedding and accessories, can be converted into ideal homes for dogs. For starters, though, dog houses should be appropriate to the climate. If winters are cold, consider an insulated dog house, complete with a door, to trap the animal's body heat. For very cold climates, heated dog houses are another option. Healthy Dog HousesOn the other hand, if the weather tends to get very hot, look for a well-ventilated dog house in a lighter, sun-reflecting color, making sure to keep the dog house in a shady spot. Dog houses with raised bases are another good idea, keeping the floor dry in the event of heavy rain. Materials are another important but often overlooked factor. Above all, make sure that the dog house is constructed from non-toxic materials that can't harm the dog. Dogs tend to chew on things, so a dog house made from treated wood (notorious for its toxic chemical content) is a bad choice. Treated wood, as well as some plastics and vinyl materials, also tends to emit toxic fumes, which can prove dangerous to the dog's health. However, most wood and plastic dog houses are safe. If in doubt, ask your veterinarian for a recommendation.
