Down Pillows

Many people rave about their down pillows. But are they really more comfortable or do they just cost more than their cotton fill or polyester cousins? Down pillows are unique in that they are filled with down, or goose feathers, instead of cotton, polyester, or foam. Down pillows, by and large, are designed to be hypoallergenic, so people with animal dander allergies can still use them with no adverse reactions. However, they are made with a variety of types of down, so always inspect the label carefully. Some pillows are a mixture of down and chopped foam pieces, while others are made with artificial materials that simulate the feeling of down. These are usually labeled as 'simulated feel down' or 'down-like feel' pillows. Even when the tag does say 100 percent down, make sure that the feathers have been cleaned and removed of allergens prior to stuffing. This can help to ensure your allergies don't act up. You should always use a pillowcase with your down pillows. Many people also cover their pillows with hypoallergenic liners first (opened on one end by a zipper to provide a snug fit around your pillow), then put on an outer pillowcase. This can also help prevent feathers from creeping out onto your bed, as well as keep dust mites out. If your pillow becomes wet, let it dry in the sun thoroughly before using it again, as mold or bacteria can build up easily if it doesn't dry properly.
