A duvet, or down comforter, is a typical bed cover used by many people throughout the world. French for 'down,' duvets are durable and warm, filled with feathers from ducks or geese. They were first popularized in northern Europe and Scandinavia to keep people warm in very arctic climates. Now, duvets vary in weight (from lightweight to winter weight) to accommodate people who live in any type of climate but want the comfort of a supple duvet. Many people who have duvets prefer to shield them. For king-sized beds, duvet covers are sold to help protect your duvet and add years to its life. King duvet covers also give you an easy way to decorate your bedroom with a splash of color, pattern, or coordinating theme. When choosing a duvet cover for your king bed, consider the weight you'll be adding to your comforter. If you have a winter weight down duvet or comforter, you don't want to add a cover that is equally heavy. Typically, cotton or silk king duvet covers are adequate. In warmer climates or with lightweight duvets, you can add a microfiber or even microsuede duvet cover to add pizzazz and texture to your bed without adding too much weight to your comforter. Duvets are popular throughout the world, and are even a part of a celebration in some countries called 'Duvet Day.' On this day, you are allowed to call into to work and say you're not coming in with no real excuse. In Australia, they call duvets 'doonas,' and a sick day from work is often referred to as a 'doona day,' or 'down feathers' day. |
