La-Z-Boy Incorporated is a furniture manufacturing company located in Monroe, Michigan. Established in 1927, it has become one of the world's largest producers of residential furniture. La-Z-Boy was started by two cousins, Edward M. Knabusch and Edwin J. Shoemaker, who quit their jobs and invested their time seeking the American dream. When the two 'Ed' cousins started out, they named the company Kna-shoe Manufacturing Company. In 1929, the brothers invented a versatile chair that was designed for 'nature's way of relaxing'. This was the first upholstered recliner and it revolutionized the way chairs were manufactured. Names such as Sit-N-Snooz, Slack-Back, and Comfort Carrier were suggested, but the name La-Z-Boy was what the brothers decided on. La-Z-Boy is famous for its recliners, but it also manufactures sofas, tables, and chairs, and accessories such as pillows, lamps, and mirrors. La-Z-Boy has grown and is divided into two segments. The Upholstery Group manufactures and distributes upholstery furniture and the Casegoods Group imports and produces wooden furniture. The companies under the La-Z-Boy upholstery group of companies include Bauhaus, Centurion, Clayton Marcus, England, La-Z-Boy, and Sam Moore. The companies belonging to the La-Z-Boy Casegoods Company are American Drew, American of Martinsville, Hammary, Kincaid, Lea, and Pennsylvania House. La-Z-Boy products are marketed through a network of La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries, retail stores, and La-Z-Boy galleries, along with in-store gallery display programs of several other La-Z-Boy brands.
