About Oak Flooring

Wood floors have usually been preferred choices for homes and offices although they are not generally suitable for bathrooms and kitchens. This type of flooring is extremely common in earthquake-prone areas such as San Francisco and St. Louis. However, wood flooring is becoming popular throughout America and other parts of the globe because of its strength and durability. Oak is the main choice for hardwood floors in North America. Any tree of the genus Quercus of the Beech family is known as oak. An important feature of oak is the spiral arrangement of the leaves. This wood is found mainly in the northern hemisphere. Oak flooring can be white, black, or red depending on the color of the wood. The hues also differ in the oak used for these floors. White oak flooring is harder with a more uniform look. It is lasting and less stiff. This hard, heavy woody possesses medium bending strength. Red Oak flooring is porous because of the open grains. The inherent natural characteristics of oak such as burrs, quarter-sawn grains, and knots make it much in demand for flooring. Modern as well as traditional homes have a preference for oak wood flooring. Chestnut oak and willow oak are the common materials used. The flooring can be done either with the use of linear strips, wide planks, or parquets. Solid oak floors are the traditional wood floors used in homes. Nowadays, engineered wood flooring is used for basements and bathrooms. The use of acrylic and lacquer in oak wood flooring results in beautiful, elegant and durable floors in homes, malls, and offices.
