About Pewter Statue

Pewter is a metal alloy that looks a lot like silver. Primarily consisting of tin with traces of copper, low-grade pewter also shows traces of lead. Today, zinc, antimony and even bismuth are added to the alloy. Pewter has three different grades depending on the amount of copper and lead present in the alloy: Fine, Trifle, and Lay of the Ley metal. The alloy will oxidize if left untreated for a period of time. Pewter is highly malleable, and soft enough to carve and shape by hand tools or by beating. Casting is a common method used, since pewter has a low melting point. For this reason, artists used pewter in the Art Nouveau period as an artwork medium. The origin or invention of pewter has not been documented, but some Chinese pewter that has been discovered is believed to be 2,000 years old. The Middle Ages saw an extensive usage of pewter for a number of purposes, such as making utensils, tableware, and seals. However, when other materials like glass and china started gracing the tables of all classes of people, the usage of pewter slowly faded, by the 18th century. The 20th century has seen a re-awakening of this art form. Now, pewter artifacts like statues, old Roman plates, utensils, seals, mugs, tea sets, candle-stands and oil lamps are looked upon as treasured collectibles. Since this shiny, bright metal looks a lot like silver, it is used today for making statuettes and figurines that are sold as collectables, owing to the fact that it is much cheaper than silver.
