About Pine Furniture

Pine is a wood found in nature that has been used for furniture for hundreds of years. Pine furniture first found popularity in the 17th century in Europe. Here, local craftsmen and carpenters fashioned pine furniture for humble homeowners, instead of royalty or gentry. Regal furniture was made from oak or similar woods. Despite the class distinctions, pine continued to experience great use in furniture making throughout the 18th and 19th centuries in England, France, Spain, and other European nations. By the 19th century, though, it truly became the wood of choice for many furniture pieces of all types. At this time, carpenters would disguise the pine with different finishes. These included monochromatic, polychromatic, and simulated finishes, and the more colorful ones even featured floral or geometric paintings applied over a base color.Local smiths began making pine chairs, tables, chests, and bench beds for families of all economic backgrounds as the wood became more popular. They painted much of it, as was popular at the time, and making this type of furniture was even a hobby that was used to pass away long, cold winters. It was known thus as the 'workman's wood.'' Pine furniture is still known today for its clean lines and extreme functionality without frivolity. It continues to be manufactured all over the world, on multiple continents. Shaker-style pine furniture is a great example of this kind of carpentry, exhibiting geometric shapes with form more important than creative expression or style in most pieces. Fans of this kind of furniture appreciate the no-nonsense look and feel of it, as well as its reputation for durability.
