Queen comforters come in a variety of styles and colors. In construction, though, there are only a few options. Basically, comforters can be down fill or fiber fill, like cotton or polyester. For comforters that come in bed-in-a-bag sets, these are pre-covered cotton or blend fill blankets that are thick and pre-constructed into one piece. Down comforters are typically white or off-white, with down goose feather fill. They can be covered by duvet covers and must be cared for properly to ensure their longevity. Pre-assembled, non-down comforters can typically be thrown into the washing machine with no problems. Silk versions, though, often must be dry-cleaned. For down comforters, placing a cover over the blanket will reduce the need for washing. Be sure to shake out the comforter weekly to maintain an even feel and coverage. While non-down comforters should be washed at least twice a season, down comforters only need machine washing or dry cleaning every three to five years, especially those that have been covered. Avoid moisture on any material, but especially silk and down queen comforters. If they do get wet or you decide to dry them in a dryer, be sure that they are thoroughly dry before placing them back on your bed. Mold and bacteria can build up in comforters if they are not completely dried. Hanging them in the sun on a clothesline is also a perfectly acceptable option for drying. In storage, comforters should also be kept away from humid, moist conditions to avoid mildew. |
