A rabbit hutch is the best choice for a rabbit kept outside. A safe, comfortably appointed, spacious hutch is one of the most important pet supplies because it keeps your fuzzy friend inside and protected from all sorts of hazards. Rabbit hutches can be purchased premade, or, if you are particularly adventurous, you can choose to construct your own. The traditional rabbit hutch is a plywood box, one foot by one foot by four feet in size. This hutch size does not allow nearly enough space for your rabbit to move around. Instead, choose a hutch that is a minimum of four feet in size for a small or medium-sized rabbit. A good rule of thumb is to buy the largest rabbit hutch you can possibly afford. Purchasing a second-hand rabbit hutch is a good way to get a large, comfortable home for your rabbit without breaking your budget. Wood rabbit hutches are the most common, with screened-in or wire-mesh sides. Rabbit hutches should be elevated off the ground and have waterproof tops to protect pets from inclement weather. A private enclosure is a nice touch, especially if you have more than one rabbit and plan to allow them to breed. Although rabbit hutches are typically used outside, they can be used indoors if space allows. Rabbit cages tend to be a bit smaller and fit more easily into most in-home rabbit areas. Whether you choose a rabbit cage or a hutch, be sure to keep your pet's safety and comfort in mind, avoiding selections that are very small, contain wire bottoms, or have sharp edges. |
