Designing a bedroom for your teenager shouldn't be a daunting task. Whether you spend hundreds of dollars on name-brand teen bedding designers or you make your own sheets, you can create a safe, comfortable environment for your teen to call his or her own. First and foremost, include your teenager in decorating decisions, particularly ones which involve furniture, wall space, and fabrics. You and your teenager can create bedding together as a fun home crafts project. Pick out two so-called 'flat' sheets and then stitch these sheets together on three sides. You should leave a small opening on the fourth side to fit over your comforter. You can adorn your homemade teen bedding with ribbons, bows, and other fun accoutrements. Boys may prefer snaps or Velcro on their teen bedding. You may also develop throw pillows and blankets to go with your teen bedding. Focus on a general design scheme. Some teens push to create themes based on movies, television shows, or rock albums. If possible, talk your teen out of creating a 'singled themed' room. Aim for neutrality in your designs--don't worry, your teenager will find ways to 'colorize' his or her space. For tips, browse the Pottery Barn teen catalog. Check out teen sheets and comforters--particularly twin extra long sheets. Finally, keep your teenager's bedding clean by insisting on a full-scale bed sheet 'strip and wash' at least once a week. Some parents insist that their children make their beds every morning. While this rule may seem too authoritarian to some parents, the practice of regular bed making can help keep order. You may not be able to keep your teen's room perfectly tidy, but if you aim high, you'll go far. |
