Breitling Emergency

Breitling, based in Switzerland, has been producing high-quality chronometers, or extremely precise watches, since 1884. Primarily intended for use in aviation, these watches are also worn by those who simply like them for their aesthetic qualities and their high degree of accuracy. Breitling watches are available in a wide variety of models, including both quartz and entirely mechanical versions. The best-known model of all Breitling watches, however, may be the Breitling Emergency. Designed specifically for use by pilots and aircrews, this watch is equipped with a special emergency transmitter than can be activated in case of a distress situation.According to Breitling, the microtransmitter of the Breitling Emergency broadcasts over the aircraft emergency frequency (121.5 MHz). In the event of a crash or other unplanned landing, the wearer can unscrew a small cap on the watch and extend the antenna, which will broadcast on the 121.5 MHz frequency for 48 hours. The manufacturer approximates the frequency at about 100 miles or 160 kilometers if the search aircraft are flying at a height of 20,000 feet. According to news reports, in January of 2003 a pair of British pilots who crash-landed a helicopter in Antarctica used their Breitling Emergency watches to call for help, and were subsequently rescued. While it is possible to purchase a Breitling Emergency watch without proof of a pilot's license, potential buyers may find it helpful to contact Breitling for information on the issues surrounding accidental triggering of the distress signal.
