About Audi

Audi is a German automobile manufacturer with headquarters located at Ingolstadt, Bavaria. It is wholly a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group. The credit for establishing Audi goes to August Horch, an engineer born in Winningen. Horch manufactured the first automobile in 1901, at Zwickau. Surprisingly, he was forced out from the company that he had founded. Eventually, he started a new company but sold automobiles under the brand name 'Horch' until his former partner sued him. Thus, he changed the brand name 'Horch' to its Latin synonym 'Audi'. The first car manufactured under the brand name 'Audi' was a 2612cc followed by a four-cylinder 3564cc, 4680cc, and 5720cc models. August Horch left Audi in 1920, and the company was later acquired by J S Rasmussen. In 1924, Audi came up with a six-cylinder model. In 1932, Audi merged with Horch, DKW, and Wanderer; this merger was symbolized by the inter rings, which is the symbol for Audi today. Earlier, the plants of Audi were destroyed in WWII; the company had launched the SDFKZ 222 that had a V8 engine and could produce 81 HP. In 1958, after acquiring about 88 percent of the Audi Union share, Daimler-Benz became the sole owner of the company. Under Daimler, Audi manufactured modern four-stroke engines powered with 72 HP and developed the car as the front wheel drive. However, in 1964, Daimler sold the company to Volkswagen, where Audi developed a water-cool engine. The modern era of the Audi started with the Audi 100 that was launched in 1968. The series was soon extended with the Audi 80 and the Audi 50. The four-wheel drive features of the chassis of the Audi racing rally cars were redesigned by Jorg Bensinger. Recently, Audi has developed a computerized control system for its vehicles known as 'MultiMedia Interface'.
