About Barn

A barn is an agricultural building used for storing of agricultural goods. Barns are also used for providing shelter to animals and to store farm equipments. It can also be used as a covered workplace for agricultural work. Barns are usually found in farms or places where farms were existent. Older barns were usually made of lumber. This lumber was sawed from the timber in the farm. One might also find barns made of stone. They are found in areas where stone is easily available and is cheaper. In the 19th century most barns were timber framed providing them with very heavy foundations. This allowed for storage of large loads of animal feed and also provided protection against storms. In older style barns, hay was stored in the upper area, known as the hayloft. Usually a system of pulleys was used to hoist the hay top the top. Between 1900s and 1940s, barns were typically large in size and had gambrel roofs. These roofs made optimum usage of space of the hayloft. Most modern barns are made of steel. Many old barns are mended and reused. However, many are moving into critical disrepair. Once the roof starts giving way, the barn's wooden beams and barn board interior will quickly start to decay. The recent trend is to try to recycle the salvaged lumber, barn boards and reclaimed wood beams from the old barns. Wood used in barns is old forest wood and is unrivalled in its architectural quality and character. One of the ways of reusing this old wood is to use it as a painting surface. A typical example would be a piece by Ella Strittich, which features a geese flying over a pond. This painting features her signature 'Ella Strittich, 1975' and is done on rustic old barn wood.
