About Basket

A basket is a woven container which is used to carry solid items. The top is either left open or may be fitted with a lid. Baskets are traditionally made of stiff fibers. Baskets have been in use from a long time and the art of weaving baskets is very old. Archaeological sites in the Middle East show that weaving techniques were used to make mats and possibly baskets, circa 8000 BC. Baskets made with several interwoven techniques were common in 3000 BC. Baskets were first woven by gatherers and fishermen to carry nuts, grains, fruits, fish and other edible material. Today baskets can be made from plastic as well. However, before plastic came into the picture, local plant life dictated the choice of material to be used. The choice of building material greatly influences the weaving technique and the resultant basket. Hence baskets from different regions were different. Wood, bamboo, wheat, other grasses, rushes, twigs, osiers or wicker are the traditional materials used. Though baskets were made for utilitarian purposes, today they are rather in use as an aesthetic commodity. Basket-making has evolved more as an art across time. Artistic freedom allows basket makers a wide choice of colors, materials, sizes, patterns and details. Today baskets are also made from unconventional materials like crystal, glass, china clay, porcelain, ceramic, etc. and also come in a variety of colors, designs and sizes. One can find gift baskets (used for gifting fruits, flowers or wine) and Easter baskets (meant for gifts during Easter). Some designs include vintage, French, etc. Picnic baskets are designed for usage during picnics while sewing baskets are meant to hold sewing items such as threads, scissors, etc. Some vintage design sewing baskets are made in bamboo wicker and feature strong handles and trays.
