About Beetle

Volkswagen is a Germany based manufacturer of automobile, which is commonly known as VW. Beetle is one of the series of cars produced by them. It is a small, compact car that resembles an insect, because of its oddly rounded shape. The idea for this vehicle originated in the mind of Adolf Hitler, who wanted an affordable car to be manufactured for the German masses. Ferdinand Porsche, an automobile engineer, was commissioned for the task of designing this pioneering family car. The Chancellor decreed that the car should cost no more than a motorcycle with its sidecar. A savings scheme was also introduced to aid the average German to buy this car. The VW Beetle designed by Porsche had an air-cooled, four cylinder engine at the rear which was easy to repair. There were hardly any cars manufactured before the Second World War started, in 1939. Only a few civilian Beetles were made during this war. The allied air raids towards the end of the war led to a halt in production. Major Ivan Hirst, a British military officer, took charge of the factory after World War II. He persuaded the British military to place an order for twenty thousand Beetles. By 1946, this factory was manufacturing more than a thousand cars monthly. The convertible versions of the Beetle were introduced, in 1948. An excellent advertising campaign, in 1959 increased the popularity of this car in America. The VW Beetle soon became an integral part of American culture. The Beetle has featured in several movies like 'The Love Bug', and 'The Shining.' In 1998, Volkswagen introduced the New Beetle that was still based on the design of the classic Beetle. The main difference in this vehicle is the frontal location of the engine and rear storage. The New Beetle has continued the tradition of being the People's car.
