About Cheerleading

The origin of 'Cheerleading' can be dated back to the early 1880s, thanks to the Princeton University. It began with the crowd backing up the University during football games with 'rah, rah, rah, tiger, tiger, tiger, sis, sis, sis, boom, boom, boom aahhhhhh!!!' But, it was only in 1898, when Johnny Campbell, a student of Minnesota University stood in front of the crowd and directed them to cheer, that the trend of cheerleading emerged. Initially, cheerleading was restricted to guys alone, as collegiate sports for girls were limited. Females started cheerleading sometime in the 1920s; and post1940s, 90% of cheerleaders are estimated to be females. Cheerleading is a sport that involves a combination of gymnastic twists & turns, and graceful dance moves that are set to various tempos; set to be in sync with the pace of the game. In the cheerleading lingo, movements are grouped as Motions/Jumps, Stunting, Tumbling and Cheering/Chanting. The various types of Motions/Jumps include Toe Touch, Hurdler, Pike, Around the World, Herkie, Double Nine, Double Hook and Doubles. Stunting involves Flyers, Bases, Backspots, Frontspots and Pyramids, or Mounts. Partner stunts involve Toss, Chair, Shoulder Stands, Hands, Extension, Liberty, Stretch, Side Stunt and Cupie. The cheers and chants are specific to the cheerleading teams and are formulated for each game. These movements can be mastered only with practice and perseverance. Cheerleading teams may involve a team of 3 to 30 girls or guys. The team prepares and practices throughout the year for several hours every day; but the time-period for the actual performance does not take more than ten minutes. Cheerleaders are dressed in bright colors and carry colorful pom-poms in their hands. Today coaches ensure performers strictly adhere following the stringent safety measures, to avoid mishaps that may prove fatal.
