The company, Liz Claiborne, was found in the year 1976, by dress designer Liz and her husband. Liz realized that working women did not have much choice of dressing other then traditional dress, or gray funnel suit. She also observed that working women liked mix-matching different types of color and style of clothes, hence, portraying them as more liberal. Keeping this view in mind, Liz with her other partners started a small company that sold versatile, fashionable, and feminine wardrobes that would suit a working women. Liz Claiborne became famous for unique display with shirts, trousers, and skirts that matched and were put together. Until then, garments were only sold at departmental stores where they had different sections for each type of garment. At Liz customers not only found matching dresses easily but also could purchase lots of well-known brands under one roof. As the company grew the manufacturing and sourcing capacity also became powerful. Hence, the company could offer more and more variety without actually increasing the cost. The company started souring their products from various overseas countries. This allowed them to cut down on cost and give more designs then before. One of their designs poet blouse, manufactured in Taiwan, became very popular. Today, the company sells more than 40 brands and has extended their brand from just for working-women to other women wear such as sports wear, casuals, etc. Other then women wear Liz Claiborne also sells men's wear, accessories, denims, apparels, etc. They also supply to discount stores, departmental stores, luxury retailers, and others.
