About Coca

Coca is a plant that belongs to the plant family Erythroxylaceae. It is mostly found on the eastern slopes of the Andes. Though the plant has over 200 varieties, only three of them are used in making the highly-addictive stimulant drug, cocaine, in South America. The plant is famous for cocaine extracted from its new fresh leaf tips; similar to tea-bush harvesting. The leaves of the plant have a green tint, are opaque, oval, and taper toward the end. The branches are straight and the plant grows 2-3 meters in height. It has small flower that grow in clusters on short stalks. The corolla is composed of five yellowish-white petals and has heart-shaped anthers. The flower matures to a red berry. When the leaves are dried, they become curly and appear deep green on top and grayish on the lower surface. The odor exuded is similar to that of tea; however, when chewed, they produce a faint numbness in the mouth, evoking a pleasant feeling but with a pungent taste. Traditionally, they were chewed with lime to increase the release of the cocaine from the leaves. December to January is the best time to sow seeds for the plant in small plots, protecting them from direct exposure to the sun. Coca leaves are legally and illegally exported throughout the world. Mostly, coca is used for flavoring coca-tea and for medicinal uses as well. The industrial use of coca includes cosmetics and food industries. The famous soft-drink company, Coca-Cola, annually buys around 115 tons of coca leaves from Peru and 105 tons of coca leaves from Bolivia. The use of coca as an ingredient in their soft-drinks was the company's trade secret. However, nowadays, cocaine itself is not used directly in the drink, but the flavors still continue to be part of it.
