About Commodore

Commodore International is a West Chester, Pennsylvania based electronics company which was an important player in the field of home/personal computers in the 1980s. It was also known under the name of Commodore Business Machines. In 1982, it developed and marketed the highest selling computer The Commodore 64. The company was founded in 1954 by Jack Tramiel. In the early 1970s, Commodore was producing a successful range of calculators, both ordinary and scientific. The KIM-1 single board computer was designed in a metal case along with QWERTY keyboard, a monochrome monitor and a tape recorder for programming and data storage to produce the Commodore PET. The Commodore 64 was launched in 1982 as the computer after VIC-20. The chips were designed by MOS, the C64 processor was capable of delivering sound and graphics. This was new to that time. The early ads for the C64 boasted 'You can't buy a better computer at twice the price'. In 1984, after Tarmiel quit, Commodore took over Amiga Corporation which was a known player in the video game market. Commodore then released the model 'Lorraine' which was later called the 'Amiga 1000'. The Amiga 1000 had a Motorola 68000 processor and an OCS chipset. It had a stereo audio output with 2 channels, 28 KHz sampling rate, and 70 dB S/N Ratio. The resolution was a 640 x 400i with 16 colors. It had a 3.5' DD floppy drive with 880 KiB capacity. The AmigaOS 1.0/1.1/1.2 operation system loaded on power-on from the Kickstart floppy disk. The software in it consisted of Microsoft Amiga BASIC and Voice synthesis library.
