About Convertibles

Convertibles, also called Cabriolet in British English, are automobiles with folding or retracting roof. This is a body style that has a collapsible roof and the roof is typically made of aluminum, vinyl, steel plastic etc. Often when the convertible has a collapsible roof made of a rigid material such as steel it is referred to as 'retractable hardtop'. Many convertibles have roll-up glass windows and can be converted into an enclosed coupe. Most convertibles are two-door models. However, there were exceptions such as the Lincoln Continental produced in the 1960s which had four doors. If one traces the history of convertible, it starts with the cars that were initially manufactured in 1927, taking an inspiration from buggy and bicycle. Weather protection at that time was secondary to building a car that was reliable and sturdier. This is when all the cars were roofless. After these goals were achieved by the car makers they shifted their attention to protection from weather, thus the hardtop coupe were produced. Though, the sales of the hardtops increased, convertibles still remained popular as sporty, adventurous, and as collectibles. As the years passed, more and more automobile companies started manufacturing convertibles with different features, style, engine etc. During mid of the 19th century the automobile manufacturers focused a lot on styling and look of the convertible. Today, the scenario is different. The styling as well the engine is given equally high importance. Convertibles have nowadays become a synonym for sporty expensive cars with high power and engine capacities.
