About David Beckham

Born on May 2, 1975, in Leytonstone, London, David Robert Joseph Beckham is an English soccer player who plays for Real Madrid and is captain of the English national team. As a young boy, David was highly athletic and actively played various sports, but he had his eyes fixed on the England national football team, and Manchester United. He was signed on by his dream team in 1991 and in 1992 his team won the FA Youth Cup. His foremost Premier League appearance was on April 2, 1995 in a match against Leeds United; the match was a goalless draw. Beckham's first brush with fame happened after the world witnessed his spectacular goal against Wimbledon in 1996. He was voted PFA Young Player of the Year in 1997. Beckham traveled with England's national football team for the 1998 World Cup but England's then coach Hoddle refused to allow Beckham on the grounds, publicly admitting that Beckham was not concentrating on the game. He was allowed to play for the third match and scored a goal, assisting in a 2-0 victory for his team. Team England were eliminated when Diego Simone cried foul against Beckham, urging a red card in his name by the referee. Beckham was soon the target of criticism and taunts from journalists and football fans. David staged a come back in 2000, when he was promoted to team captain. England qualified for the 2002 World Cup finals under Beckham's leadership; at a qualifying match, England defeated Germany with an impressive 5-1 victory. In 2001, Beckham scored the winning goal after his team was awarded a free-kick in a match against Greece. He used his trade-mark curling strike kick and ensured the teams qualification into the 2002 World Cup. He was then named BBC Sports Personality of the Year, 2001. Beckham moved from Manchester United to Real Madrid by 2003 and scored five times in the first sixteen matches for Real.
