About Dell

Dell, Inc was founded in 1984 by Michael Dell, on a simple concept: that by selling computer systems directly to customers, Dell could best understand their needs and efficiently provide the most effective computing solutions to meet those needs. This direct business model eliminates retailers that add unnecessary time and cost, or diminish Dell's understanding of customer expectations. The direct model allows the company to build every system to order and offer customers powerful, richly-configured systems at competitive prices. Dell also introduces the latest relevant technology much more quickly than companies with slow-moving, indirect distribution channels, turning over inventory every four days on average. At 13, Michael Dell was already an entrepreneur. He ran a mail-order stamp trading business from home, which within a few months, grossed $2,000. At 16, he sold newspaper subscriptions and at 17, bought his first BMW. When Dell enrolled at the University of Texas in 1983 as Pre-Med student, he found time to establish a business selling RAM chips and disk drives for IBM PCs. He sold his stock through newspapers and computer magazines at 10%-15% below retail. Dell's dorm room computer components business was grossing about $80,000 a month '? enough to persuade him to drop out of college. Soon he started making and selling IBM clones under his brand name. By eliminating the retail markup, Dell could sell PCs at about 40% of the price of an IBM. In only 15 years, the company's sales skyrocketed from $6 million to a whopping $23.6 billion. Dell has opened sales offices in over 34 countries, and boasts over 33 thousand employees in over 170 countries and territories all over the world. In 2001, Dell was rated No.1 in the U.S for standard Intel architecture server shipments. Dell stepped down as CEO in mid-July 2004. Company president Kevin Rollins filled the position; Dell remained chairman of the company.
