About Depression

Depression glass was made in the United States, in the year 1929. This glass was named after the depression period, as it was manufactured during this period. It was one of the cheapest and mass produced glassware. This glass was made in molds and not by the blowing method. The manufacturers made the glass in different colors, and patterns. Today, this glass is considered to be a collectors' item. Depression glass is available in various varieties such as carnival glass, milk glass, uranium glass, satin glass, and pressed glass. The carnival glass is made in different translucent colors of amethyst, cobalt, red, and green. It has a unique iridescent sheen, which is achieved with help of metallic salts. These metallic salts are applied on the hot glass, when it is being pressed. Milk glass is opaque and white in color. This glass is used for making articles such as the animal covered dishes, which are also in great demand. Uranium glass is also known as the vaseline glass, and is available in yellow-green, and pale yellow varieties. It gets this color from the addition of uranium oxide, while making the glass. This glass is used to make decorative items and tableware. Satin glass is similar to milk glass; however it has a satin finish. It is generally comes in pastel shades and has a glossy surface. Pressed glass is made by using a plunger. The plunger presses the molten glass into the mold. Mostly, this pressed glass is used to make beads. All these depression glasses are considered to be antiques, and are quite popular among the collectors.
