About Diana Ross

Diane Ernestine Earle Ross (misspelled Diana on her birth certificate, which she later adopted) was born on March 26, 1944, in Detroit, Michigan. She started singing in a trio as a teenager, and in 1960, she and her two partners, Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson, were signed to Motown Records as 'The Supremes'. The group had 12 Number One hits (1964-70), including 'Baby Love' and 'Stop! In the Name of Love.' They were one of the most successful pop acts of the decade. Ross emerged as a solo artist in the '70s with hits such as 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough' and 'Touch Me in the Morning.' She received an Oscar nomination for her performance as Billie Holiday in 'Lady Sings the Blues' (1972). During the '80s she stayed on the charts and continued to tour, belting out hits including 'Endless Love,' 'Upside Down,' and 'Chain Reaction.' Like her good friend Michael Jackson, she became a favorite of the tabloids: in 1999, she was arrested for assaulting a security guard at London's Heathrow Airport and in 2002 she interrupted a concert tour to enter a rehabilitation program for drug and alcohol abuse. On the personal front, Diana married music promoter Bob Ellis in 1971, and gave birth to daughter Rhonda Suzanne. Years later, it was revealed that Motown president Berry Gordy was the child's true father. Ellis did father their other two children. The couple divorced in 1977. She moved to Connecticut with her three daughters and in 1985 married Norwegian shipping tycoon, Arne Naess, Jr. In 1993, 'The Guinness Book Of World Records' pronounced her the most successful female music artist ever. In a remarkable career spanning over 30 years, Diana Ross has proven herself the accomplished music artist as well as the most successful female singer of all time.
