Making its debut on the Nickelodeon channel in the year 2000, Dora the Explorer won popularity among children everywhere. Dora is an animated show based on the adventures of Dora, her friend Boots the Monkey, her talking backpack, the Map, and more. Each episode has them embarking on a task that includes certain reoccurring tasks, such as checking the map for directions to get where she needs to go, and checking her backpack for items to help her out. In addition, the music related to these tasks are catchy enough to engross toddlers, and young children alike. The show itself is typically 30 minutes in length; however, special hour-long episodes have been released giving Dora a specific "extra special" assignment. Dora is said to represent a pan-Latino girl, to give a more broad Latino expression. Her look remained the same, despite having three different young people doing the voice-overs over the years. This was until "tween" version of Dora was announced in 2009, in conjunction with four friends; Alana, Kate, Naiya, and Emma. The new tween Dora caused some controversy among Dora fans; however, the "original" Dora remains popular show today. This popularity extends from the show on DVD, to many different Dora merchandise choices that are favorites among children worldwide. Additionally, Dora offers several book series. One specifically deals with learning to read, giving children a familiar guide into the process. Video games have even been released using Dora as a gaming character to allow children to have an adventure along with Dora. These games are available for PC, as well as many home gaming systems.
