Drill

A drill is a tool used to create holes in a rigid material using the rotating motion of the drill bit. The drill bit is held firmly by a chuck at the font of the tool. This chuck can be loosened and tightened to remove and change drill bits. The bit, made of a reinforced metal, has a pencil-like construction with a serrated tip. When using the drill, the user places it over the point at which the hole is to be bored and applies pressure. The rotation of the bit coupled with the force exerted by the user's hand results in miniscule granules being chipped off the material. As soon as the hole is deep enough, the user can then withdraw the drill. Drills can be either manual or automated. Manual drills have a contoured handle at the side of the tool that the user rotates with one hand, while holding the drill with the bit against the target in the other hand. Rotating the handle rotates the bit. Automated drills are powered either through electricity or compressed air. These drills are more efficient than manual drills. Besides completing a hole boring task much faster than manual drills, automated drills also help conserve the energy expended if the user were to drill the hole manually. Additionally, these drills can be used to drill into hard substances, such as hard wood, metal, concrete, masonry, and even stone. Drills can be either corded or cordless. Corded drills have a power cord which needs to be connected to a power source. Thus, operation of this kind of drill requires the presence of a power source near the work area. Cordless drills, on the other hand, are powered by rechargeable batteries and, thus, are completely portable and can be used outdoors too.
