About Figurines

Hummel Goebel Figurine is the legacy of late Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel also known as M. I. Hummel. Born on May 21, 1909, Berta Hummel was a German nun and artist. Today, her famous art work is more affectionately known as the Hummel figurines. In 1927, she attended the Academy of Applied Arts in Munich and also joined the Franciscan Convent of Siessen in Bad Saulgau; she graduated, in 1931. She first painted pictures of little children which were printed on to post cards. It was these post cards that caught the attention of porcelain company owner, Franz Goebel's attention and he decided to turn Sister Hummel's post card art into porcelain figurines. The fist collection was launched in 1953 and became popular all over, thus making way for the launch of more collections. Sister Hummel passed away on November 6, 1946 at the early age of 34 due to tuberculosis. However, her work was continued and carried forward by Franz Goebel and his team of dedicated artistes. Today, Hummel Goebel Figurines have become a kitsch icon. Still well known and immensely popular through out the world, the word Hummel has evolved to become a generic term for figurines. Contemporary figurines are dressed up to look more modern and stylish. Antique Hummel Goebel Figurines have become a collector's item and figurine enthusiasts are willing to drop big dollar for a rare, mint condition Hummel Goebel Figurine. So popular Hummel Goebel Figurines include those styled on animals such as boxer dogs, characters such as tooters and Santa's little helpers, and other such as solider boys, little fiddlers, angels, and fairies, and even Christmas tree ornamentations.
