Jean-Paul Gaultier is a French fashion designer and retired television presenter. He was born on April 24, 1952, in Arcueil, France. Gaultier never went to fashion school; however at an early age he began sketching and sending his sketches to famous couture style artist at that time. Pierre Cardin was impressed with his work and hired him as an assistant, in the year 1970. He is known as the 'enfant terrible,' which stands for the bad boy of French fashion. Gaultier launched his first individual collection, in 1976. His collections are based on street wear that focuses on popular culture; however his Haute Couture range is formal yet bizarre and mischievous. During the 90s, he designed sculptured costumes for Madonna. Gaultier was fundamental in popularizing skirts, especially kilts, worn by men. His collection featured unconventional models such as older men and full-figured women, pierced and heavily tattooed models in his shows; this gained him popularity as well as criticism at the same time. He has designed costumes for a number of movies such as Luc Besson's The Fifth Element, Pedro Almod'³var's Kika, Peter Greenaway's The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover, and Jean-Pierre Jeunet's La Cit'© des enfants perdus (The City of Lost Children). He launched line of perfumes starting with a women's floral-oriental called Classique, in 1993. Two years later he unveiled, Le M'¢le for men, which is one of the most popular perfumes for men in the Europe Union. Jean-Paul Gaultier is one of the top names in the fashion industry. His style of work is unmatched in the fashion world. |
