About General Electric

GE or the General Electric Company is an American multinational technology and services conglomerate. It is rated as one of the most successful organizations of its type. GE was rated as the world's second largest company according to the Forbes Global 2000. The year 1876 saw Thomas Alva Edison open a new lab in Menlo Park, New Jersey. It was at this laboratory where a successful development of the incandescent electric lamp was realized. Edison combined all his businesses into the Edison General Electric Company, by 1890. In 1879, Elihu Thomson and Edwin J. Houston started their own company called the Thomson-Houston Electric Company. Both the companies were competitors and as the business expanded it became extremely difficult for both companies to manufacture electrical installations, based solely on their own technology. Financer, J.P. Morgan arranged the merger and the two companies collaborated to form the General Electric Company, in 1892. The company had its headquarters in Schenectady, New York. General Electric was one amongst the 12 original companies listed on the recently formed Dow Jones Industrial Average, and is the only company that functions till date. Even today GE stands out as an enormous multinational conglomerate based in Fairfield, Connecticut. GE describes itself as a company comprising of a vast number of business units or 'businesses'. The company is looking forward to becoming a 'green' company by launching its 'Ecomagination' initiative. General Electric is a giant in the electronics market. They manufacture a huge range of products such as Alarm Clock, and Caller ID Bedroom Phone.
