About Handcuffs

W.A. Adams patented a handcuff design, based on swing arms in 1862. This design was named the 'Pawl & Ratchet'. Handcuffs are designed to restrain the individual by securing his wrists close together. A handcuff is adjustable according to various wrist sizes and features a ratchet-lock sequence. Handcuffs are manufactured out of various materials including carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, polymer handcuffs, and lightweight plastic disposable ones. Handcuffs are available in two distinct designs. The first type involves the two cuffs conjoined by a short metal chain providing some, but restricted movement, for the handcuffed individual. The second type uses a small hinge between the two cuffs with maximum restriction in movement. The second type is considered more secure and rigid by operational police officers. Another variety of handcuffs has a small metal block or bar instead of a chain linking the two cuffs. Modern developments have led to designing plastic handcuffs or better known as PlastiCuffs, or FlexiCuffs. Also called flex-cuffs, tri-fold cuffs, or zip-strips, these are lighter as compared to traditional metal cuffs manufactured out of disposable plastic. They are preferred by soldiers and the police for situations involving many individuals to be arrested, such as public demonstrations or protests breaking the law. Most handcuffs designed recently, follow a standard universal key design in the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada. This offers a convenience to officers across stations or prisons, while transferring prisoners, in events such as the loss the keys. Certain designs have double locks with lock springs that prevent the handcuff from tightening further leading to complicated injuries, which may result in loss of limbs or even death. Such handcuffs are also difficult to be 'lock-picked' by the subject. Handcuffs are also popular among magicians and escape artists such as the famous Harry Houdini. John Tower incorporated 'Tower Handcuffs' in 1865, one of the most successful American handcuff companies in the world. The companies product, implementing the basic Adam's patent, was used until World War II. Many companies provide handcuffs to security divisions of governments and even the general public for private use, such as the American Handcuff Company, Crocket & Kelly, GOTCHA, and Smith & Wesson, among others.
