About Hdtv

The abbreviation, HDTV, stands for high-definition television. It is a television broadcasting system that has a higher resolution output than that provided by traditional broadcasting formats such as PAL, NTSC, and SECAM. HDTV is broadcast digitally, which is why its introduction occasionally coincides with that of the digital television. HDTV technology was first launched in the US, during the 1990s by the Digital HDTV Grand Alliance. The alliance comprised of AT&T, General Instrument, MIT, Philips, Sarnoff, Thomson, and Zenith. Ever since television was invented, the entire process of transmitting these signals to receiving them and then displaying the final output involves analog signals. These analog signals used to transmit data is made up of varying radio waves that are later converted into picture and sound by conventional CRT television sets. The CRT sets receives these signals and the draws the image on the screen. When the image is drawn using CRTs the picture is interlaced, which is one of the main reasons due to which the image on TVs flicker. Contrary to all this HDTV is digital, thus loss of quality is negligible. The picture resolution can also be increased, wherein the picture can also be displayed on large screens with minimum pixilation. HDTV has nearly twice the lineal resolution SDTV's provide. It also supports 16:9 aspect ratio pictures without the use of letterboxing; this further increases the effective resolution of the picture. HDTV has a greater bandwidth which is why colors appear more realistic and the entire picture quality is 2-5 times more than that of conventional formats. Its enhanced quality and details make for some pleasurable viewing even on larger screens. With technology advancing in leaps and bounds, HDTV technology seems to be the future of television broadcasting. Most major companies dealing in transmission technologies are looking to grow in this direction.
