About Hermit Crabs

Hermit crabs are easily identifiable by the gastropod shells that they 'wear' on their bodies and by their five sets of claws. On most hermit crabs, however, the claws are not of the same size, and one of the claws in their front pair will be much larger than the other. This is in part due to evolution and adaptation--if both pairs of claws were equally large, they would not fit in the shell. If, however, they were both small, the crab would not have sound defenses.Hermit crabs live in shells to protect the one part of their bodies that does not have an exoskeleton--their abdomen. Within the abdomen are vital organs, such as parts of the digestive system, as well as the reproductive system. After choosing an appropriately sized shell (one that allows them to use their large claw to seal the opening for protection), some hermit crabs have been observed to grow based on the shape of their shell. While many types of hermit crabs primarily live on land, one notable type of hermit crab that you may want to add to your aquarium is a dwarf blue leg hermit crab. These hermit crabs have blue legs with red bands around them. Unlike most hermit crabs, their claws are of equal size.In addition to the striking visual appeal that the dwarf blue leg hermit crab will have in your aquarium, they also benefit the environment. By sifting through the sand, they will provide aeration within the tank. They consume certain types of algae and bacteria, keeping your aquarium clean for all of its inhabitants.
