About Hibiscus Flower

Famous for its showy flowers, the Hibiscus is primarily used as a landscape shrub. Amongst the species, the Hibiscus Syriacus is South Korea's national flower, where it is known as the 'Mugunghwa' or 'Rose of Sharon'. Hibiscus 'Rosa-Sinensis' is Malaysia's national flower, where the native name for it is 'Bunga Raya' or 'Chinese hibiscus'. In Hawaii, the Hibiscus Brackenridgei is the state flower and it is known as 'Ma'o hau hele'. Hibiscus, also known as Rosemellow belongs to the family of Malvaceae with a large genus of 200-220 species of flower plants. The flower is generally cultivated and is native to sub tropical, tropical, and warm temperate region in the entire globe. The genus of hibiscus includes annual, perennial herbaceous plants, woody shrubs, and small trees. The leaves of this flowering plant are toothed or lobed from the margin. They have the traits of alternate, simple, and ovate, to lanceolate leaves. The flowers of this plant generally have five petals, each measuring around 4-15 cm broad. The petals have an array of colors, ranging from pink, purple, white, red, yellow etc. The fruit is a dry five-lobed capsule. Each lobe contains several seeds, which gets released when the capsule turns in to flower at its maturity. Kenaf, one of the species of the Hibiscus, is widely used in paper making, whereas another species Hibiscus Sabdariffa, commonly known as Roselle is used as a vegetable for jams and herbal teas. The Jamaica drink in Mexico is made from calyces of the Roselle plant. Karkade, a beloved tea in Egypt and Sudan, is made from Roselle petals and is served hot or with chilled ice.
